The Client
The Investors in People Standard is a business improvement tool designed to advance a company’s performance through its people. It was formed in 1993 to take national ownership of the Standard, protect its integrity and ensure its successful promotion and development.
Since its inception the Standard has been reviewed every three years to ensure that it remains relevant, accessible and attractive to all. The most recent review was completed in November 2004.
The Challenge
From their Head Office in London, Investors in People work with a number of assessors who are based in Quality Centres around the UK. From these Quality Centres, companies requiring the IIP accreditation are assessed and marked accordingly against a scale of indicators: 0 = fail, 1 = pass, and so on.
The Standard itself is a framework and regardless of your company size you have to meet the same criteria or ‘indicators’ as any another company but the Standard recognises that you will do this in a different way.
In order to facilitate the assessments, IIP had in place a piece of software that acted like a survey. As the system grew, it was adapted to meet their requirements but very soon became an unacceptable way of working.
A solution therefore had to be found of developing a more centralised and streamlined system that the Quality Centres and assessors could work with; a system that was fully integrated with the numerous databases held by IIP.
What we did
JIT Systems sat down with the teams from the IT and Quality departments as well as the people who managed the Quality Centres. They analysed what was required and returned to successfully tender for the business against five other companies.
JIT were then able to design and develop a flexible and multi-faceted solution.
The IIP Profile web tool now runs all the assessments through a secure log-in facility. Heavily data protected, the system allows the individual assessor to complete a company assessment against an accepted ‘benchmark’. The results are then worked out and a comprehensive report with automatically generated graphical PDF’s is produced.

As more and more companies come online and meet the agreed criteria for the accreditation, the ‘benchmark’ continues to rise. The system takes this into account and even has the ability to compare one company with another in a particular area or business sector.
Another key addition developed by JIT is the ‘Champion’s Tool’. Hosted on a separate website, business professionals from major blue-chip companies mentor smaller businesses who are considering the accreditation. Seminars and training days can be organised online with everything handled by the system.
